What Is The Motability Scheme?

Since 1977, the Motability Scheme has helped hundreds of thousands of disabled people and their families achieve a better quality of life, enabling them to put state benefits toward a three-year lease on a motor vehicle (which can be specially adapted if necessary) a powered scooter or wheelchair. If you are receiving the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement, you will be able to take advantage of the Motability Scheme.

The three-year contract hire arrangement on Motability cars comes with road tax, insurance and servicing cover included. At the end of the leasing period, you can choose another new car. Even if you are eligible for the scheme but do not drive, you can nominate one or two relatives, friends or carers to do the driving for you.
